In a world where concrete jungles dominate, urban farming is a beacon of sustainability and community resilience. On this episode of The AM Show, we sit down with Jesse Miller, Farm Manager at Spring Creek Towers, to explore his journey in urban agriculture and his mission to cultivate not just crops, but also strong community ties.
The Role of a Farm Manager in the City
Managing an urban farm is no small feat, and Jesse Miller is at the forefront of the movement. At Spring Creek Towers, he oversees everything from crop planning and soil management to community outreach and educational initiatives. Through his leadership, the farm provides fresh, locally grown produce while serving as an educational hub for sustainability and nutrition.
Jesse’s passion for urban agriculture stems from the belief that farming isn’t just about food—it’s about fostering a connection between people and the land, even in the most unexpected places.
About Jesse Miller
Jesse Miller serves as the Farm Manager for The Opportunity Hub Farm, where he integrates his deep-rooted passion for environmental stewardship and sustainable agriculture. Jesse is originally from Los Angeles and has been based on the East Coast since 2018. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Geoscience from Brown University and previously worked as the Garden Educator for East New York Farms. Jesse’s hands-on experience spans various farming environments, including organic vegetable farms, a conventional corn farm in Illinois, and a maple syrup farm in Pennsylvania. His STEM background enhances his ability to create and maintain an organized and impactful garden that not only produces beautiful food but also serves as a dynamic learning environment. Jesse feels grateful to help inspire students and community members to cultivate a love for plants, nature, and fresh, locally-grown produce.
Engaging the Community Through Farming
One of the key elements of Jesse’s work is community engagement. From seasonal harvest festivals to hands-on workshops, he ensures that the farm remains a welcoming space for all. Through youth programs and volunteer opportunities, he introduces urban residents to the wonders of farming, helping them understand where their food comes from and how sustainable practices can shape a greener future.
“We want to show people that farming is accessible, no matter where you live,” Jesse shares. “It’s not just for rural areas—it can thrive in cities, too.”
A Conversation with Ed Begley, Jr.
Beyond his work at Spring Creek Towers, Jesse recently had the opportunity to sit down with Hollywood actor and well-known environmental advocate Ed Begley, Jr. In their discussion, they explored the intersections of farming, climate change, and personal sustainability efforts. Jesse took away valuable insights on how urban farming can contribute to reducing our carbon footprint and why education is key to fostering a culture of environmental responsibility.
“Hearing Ed’s perspective reinforced what we’re doing here at Spring Creek Towers. We’re not just growing food—we’re growing awareness and action,” Jesse reflects.
The Future of Urban Farming
As urban populations continue to rise, the need for sustainable food sources is more critical than ever. Jesse envisions a future where urban farms are as common as parks, offering fresh food, green spaces, and educational opportunities for generations to come.
