Joseph was born around 1716 BC in Haran, a region of Mesopotamia, a ‘miracle’ son. He is the son of Rachel, a sterile woman and the most loved wife of Jacob, who is already elderly when his son is born. Joseph soon becomes the favorite son.
Joseph receives an ornamented tunic from Jacob, symbolizing that his father selected him as his successor. Unaccepting their father’s decision and overcome by envy, the brothers decide to teach Joseph a lesson. They throw him into a deep well with no way out and then sell him as a slave.
The slave traders take Joseph to Egypt. The young Hebrew becomes the servant of Potiphar, the head of Pharaoh Apepi’s guard. Sati, the commander’s wife, develops a strong desire for Joseph and tries to win his heart but always fails. Furious, she seeks revenge by lying and accusing Joseph of attempting to rape her. As a result, Potiphar sends Joseph to prison.
Pharaoh Apepi was plagued by strange nightmares. When he learned Joseph could interpret dreams, he summoned him to the royal palace. Joseph explained that Egypt would experience seven years of abundance followed by a long period of famine. He also advised the need to store enough food during the abundant years to sustain the people during the difficult times.
When hunger strikes Canaan, Jacob sends his sons to Egypt to search for food after learning it is the only place with food. Upon meeting the respected governor of Egypt, Jacob’s sons do not recognize him as their brother due to his Egyptian attire. However, Joseph recognizes them and hides to cry in deep pain. Nearly twenty years after the betrayal, only Joseph can save the brothers who caused him so much suffering in the past.
